Wijnhuis · Vittoria, Sicilie
Handgeplukt in het warme zuiden van Siciliƫ.
Hand harvested in the warm south of Sicily.
Deep in the southeast of Sicily, in one of the hottest and driest corners of Italy, the Santa Tresa estate has been waiting for the sun since 1697. Legend has it that during a severe drought, a monk went searching for water. At a certain spot he found a small statue of Saint Teresa and began digging there.
What he found was a water source that became vital to the entire area. That well still stands today on the northern edge of the estate, and gave the winery its name. A story with a touch of gospel, and exactly the kind of authenticity Santa Tresa still works by.
On fifty hectares of red, sandy soil sitting on limestone, Santa Tresa works the way it should: no shortcuts, and all the time in the world.
Santa Tresa pours wines made from Nero d'Avola and Frappato, the grapes behind Cerasuolo di Vittoria: Sicily's only DOCG. Juicy, spiced and unmistakably southern.
